SPACE ON RYDER FARM, BREWSTER NY I 2019
Abuela is a reimagining of my great grandmother and her house en el campo of Dominican Republic. The objects - metal bucket, plants, hanging clothes, floral chair - signify objects that she had in her house, especially living on a tropical island. The bucket was used both to clean and carry clothes, and to gather water from the rainfall to use for later. The clothes were often hung due to the lack of electricty and funds to afford a washer, and the plants that she had were ones that only grew in tropical climates. She was known to wear shirts buttoned all the way up, with long skirts.
